Personal Project:
App Concept
In 2017, the #MeToo movement created a momentous spotlight on rape and rape culture. With the ability to communicate over long distances and instantly, online users quickly made it a worldwide movement, and a call for action and awareness.
While working on my masters, one of my courses in 2017 provided an opportunity to create a personal project in response to current events in the media. As an answer to the assignment and inspired by the movement, I designed an application concept to help users create a safety community for times when they might require help or need to notify friends or law enforcement in unsafe situations, such as on dates or walking home alone at night. The app was also meant to teach users about rape culture and share this information with others and to their social media.
The name was born while researching and listening to speeches from The Women’s March. I was continually drawn to the term “nasty,” a term that was trending and being embraced by women in reference to themselves, and in response to Donald Trump’s attempt to insult Hillary Clinton in the final presidential debate in 2016.
